FCC Updates 70, 80, and 90 GHz Spectrum Rules

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently updated its regulations governing the 70, 80, and 90 GHz spectrum bands. These changes are aimed at facilitating broadband access on ships and aircraft, as well as improving backhaul service for 5G networks. The updates are designed to promote more efficient spectrum usage and provide opportunities for the development of new broadband services. They include establishing new rules and updating existing ones for various bands within these spectrums.

Specific changes involve authorizing point-to-point links for moving endpoints in the 70 GHz and 80 GHz bands to enable broadband access on aircraft and ships, permitting the use of smaller and lower-cost antennas for backhaul service, and modifying the link registration process to enhance spectrum use efficiency and database accuracy.

Additionally, the FCC has initiated a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to explore potential additions to maritime operations and consider including Fixed Satellite Service earth stations in the light-licensing regime for these bands.
